Kristallista taiteeseen
From crystal to art
In the Retretti caves there was an exhibition of Finnish contemporary artists. Those caves are really breath taking even without art, so in my opinion the artist should be really careful to avoid putting too much into his/her work of art. And this year they obviously couldn’t manage to hold their horses: A stuffed rabbit hanging in a crystal necklace. A video about a kid drawing near and away. A spotlight that was focused on a scratched piece of plastic. Didn’t like.
The best piece of the caves was a guy about his fifties, who was commenting on loud: ”Is this art? Are they trying to sell this kind of crap as art? So this is how our tax money are spent.” If he was part of a performance, then I’d say it was successful. But unfortunately he seemed to be a regular customer as well, which really decreases the quality of the cave art.
I wonder why some pieces of art are really stunning and some are just whatever. I like most of the works of Tatu Hiltunen and performances of Mimosa Pale, as an example. But a rabbit hanging in a crystal neck lace – that’s crap.
